Sclerosing Cholangitis

Sclerosing cholangitis is a scarring and narrowing process of the bile ducts. This disease can be associated with either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. It may occur on it’s own and be called primary sclerosing cholangitis. This may lead to infections in the bile ducts, cancer of the bile ducts or cirrhosis of the liver. ERCP with balloon dilatation may be indicated in early cases. Antibiotics and the use of Actigall may be indicated. As the disease progresses, liver transplantation can be curative.
